Description:  

SEIU United Healthcare Workers - West is a progressive, action-orientated union of 152,000 healthcare workers whose mission is to change the lives of healthcare workers and to win universal access to quality healthcare for all.

We are seeking an Assistant Director of Communications to join our 12-person communications team to assist in developing and implementing internal and external communications programs, working with the Local's leadership team and staff. 

Responsibilities:

       Assists in directing:

       the union's media outreach program, including the development and execution of a proactive media strategy and message

       communications staff and consultants

       communications support for contract and organizing campaigns, including paid media            

       member communications, including the Local's quarterly magazine, newsletters, leaflets, direct mail, and the local union's web site.

       Writes and edits press releases and other materials

       Builds relationships with reporters, responds to inquiries

       Plans communications events

       Offers training to members and staff spokespeople

Qualifications:

       Bachelor's degree preferred

       At least five years of experience in communications & campaign work

       Superb writing and interpersonal communications skills

       Experience directing internal and external communications programs

       Experience supervising staff

       Willingness to work long, irregular hours and weekends at times

       Experience working with the labor movement or other advocacy organizations

       Commitment to progressive social change

       Must have a car, driver’s license, and be willing to travel throughout California
